It is one of the most famous statues in the world, a true artistic icon, whose original is housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. According to Greek mythology, Nike was a young winged goddess, revered by the Greeks as the personification of victory in both sport and war. It was sculpted to celebrate a naval victory that took place in Rhodes in the 3rd century BC. The goddess is depicted as taking flight from the prow of a ship.
